Julio Montano

Julio Montano, a native of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, began his career at age 17 at Ballet de Camaguey under the direction of Fernando Alonso. In 1993, Julio was chosen by the company’s director to perform in the Ballet Nacional del Peru, the country’s official dance company, under the direction of Olga Shimazaki. Two years later, he won the Circe Price, the top award for artists in Peru.
 
In 2002, Julio moved to the United States to perform with Tulsa Ballet, under the direction of Marcello Angelini, for two seasons. As a dancer, he participated in festivals and tours throughout the world, performing in countries such as Chile, Paraguay, Portugal, Panama, Bolivia, Mexico and USA. He has danced and performed a number of important leading roles in such classical productions as Cinderella, Paquita, Don Quixote, Coppelia, Raymonda, Swan Lake, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, Sherezade, The Nutcracker and Majissimo. His neoclassical and contemporary repertoire include Duende, The Leaves are Fading, Lady of the Camelias, Nine Lives and Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, among others.
 
During the 2005-2006 season, Julio joined the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts as interim co-director of the Patel Conservatory’s Classical Ballet Training Program. He also served as a judge for the National Society of Arts and Letters 2006 Dance Competition. In 2010, 2012, and 2015 Julio was awarded the Outstanding Coach Award at the American Dance Competition. As a ballet master, Julio has taught ballet at the Straz Center’s Patel Conservatory and at the University of South Florida. He has also been invited to join the faculty for summer programs in several ballet schools across the United States and South America, and has trained students for numerous ballet competitions on a regional and national level such as YAGP 2015 regional semi-finals Grand Prix, WBC 2012, 2013 2014 and 2015 Silver and Bronze Medals, ADC IBC 2010 Fernando Bujones Excellence Award, 2014 and 2015 Gran Prix among others.
