American Idiot Casting
We are extending the deadline for video submissions for our production of American Idiot. We are also changing submission criteria, if you previously submitted you do not need to re-submit but you are welcome to.
We will now accept video submissions through 10pm on Fri., June 13. Due to our callback schedule for this show and our season, we will not extend this deadline again.
All roles are open to non-union performers 18+ local to the Tampa area or who have their own secured housing available for the length of the contract. Compensation is $400 a week for 20 hours of rehearsal or 4 shows a week plus 2% of net profit once the show has covered expenses. Rates are non-negotiable and we cannot provide housing, travel, or per diem. The contract runs June 16 – Aug. 9, 2026. Rehearsals are Tue – Thu. evenings and weekend afternoons. Performances are Thu. – Sat. evenings at 7:30 and Sun. at 2pm. Jobsite is an equal opportunity employer.
We specifically desire performers with a sound authentic to Green Day’s original over a “musical theater” sound. Singers from pop/rock music backgrounds with limited theater experience but a strong desire to learn and take direction are encouraged to apply.
We are asking for two selections from the show, under 30 seconds each, sung to karaoke track (you should be able to find a version you like online). All videos should include a cut from the song “American Idiot” or “21 Guns” and then be followed by a song of your choice from below.
Casting breakdown and additional suggestions for music selections:
Johnny – reads 20s-mid 30s – Male-identifying – B2-B4.
- The guy who goes to the city; the self-proclaimed Jesus of Suburbia. Bored of his do-nothing, go-nowhere existence, he takes off for the city to get a new lease on life. He wages an inner war between a budding love for Whatsername and growing dependency on St. Jimmy and drugs.
- Selections: “When It’s Time” or “Wake Me Up When September Ends”
- Tunny – reads 20s-mid 30s – Male-identifying – D3-B4.
- The guy who goes to the city with Johnny. Johnny’s friend who follows him to the city and eventually enlists in the army which throws him into active military conflict in the Middle East. A lost dreamer who is easily swayed, first by Johnny’s ideas and then by patriotism and the American Dream.
- Selection: “Wake Me Up When September Ends”
- Will – reads 20s-mid 30s – Male-identifying – C#3-B4.
- The guy that stays home in Suburbia. Johnny’s friend. He ends up staying in Suburbia with his pregnant girlfriend Heather. The more he stays on the couch, the more he becomes slowly disconnected from the world and his own relationships.
- Selection: “Wake Me Up When September Ends”
- St. Jimmy – reads late-20s-40s – Any gender expression/identity – C3-F#5.
- A city badass. Johnny’s alter ego. An enigmatic and charismatic enabler who gets Johnny addicted to drugs and grows jealous of his relationship with Whatsername
- Selections: “St.Jimmy” or “Last Night on Earth”
- Heather – reads 20s-mid 30s– Female-identifying – A3-E5.
- A girl in suburbia. Will’s girlfriend. She discovers she is pregnant but has difficulty telling her boyfriend of the news. Once she settles down with him, she struggles to maintain their relationship with his despondency and eventually leaves him.
- Selection: “Last Night on Earth”
- Whatsername – reads 20s-mid 30s – Female-identifying – F#3-D#5.
- A girl in the city. A rebel activist–fierce, strong, and capable–who falls for Johnny. She fights to have him embrace an authentic relationship with her rather than pursue his addiction
- Selection: “Letterbomb”
- Extraordinary Girl – reads 20s-mid 30s – Female-identifying – Bb3-E5.
- A girl in the Middle East who first appears as a hallucination to Tunny. Attractive and mysterious, she later appears as his nurse and accompanies him home after the war.
- Selection: “Letterbomb”
- Ensemble (4 roles) – reads 20s-40s – All genders
- The energetic and integral force behind the show. They portray a number of critical characters throughout and have many opportunities for featured musical solos
- Selection: “Too Much Too Soon”
ADVICE
Attack the lyrics, attack the rhythm, even if providing a ballad. Listen to the original album the musical was based on. If you are not ahead of the beat you are well behind it.
TO SUBMIT
Please send a link (YouTube, Vimeo, etc – NO FILE ATTACHMENTS) to your audition along with a single pdf file containing both headshot and resume (no separate doc/jpg or pdf/png combos) with a filename that matches your name (eg, BillieJoeArmstrong.pdf or Wade-Wilson.pdf) to artisticdirector@jobsitetheater.org, including a statement that you have read and understood the full audition call and terms of the contract. Anyone needed for a callback will be notified by email, so please add jobsitetheater.org to your whitelist. The callback is currently scheduled for Mon., July 14. The callback will consist of singing in groups, a cold reading, and a dance callback. All materials must be received no later than Fri., June 13, at 10pm
